What it’s like being a mountain guide?

We have asked Ezio Chesi, Director of the School of Mountaineering, Ski Mountaineering and Hiking “Mountain Friends”, a close-knit group of friends who share the same passion for the mountains, including professionals for outdoor activities in all seasons. The best partner selected by Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti to take the Guests exploring nature.

Ezio is wearing a jacket with the official international mountain guide badge; «It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a child. I have always loved spending my time outdoors and I have always felt more comfortable wearing boots.»

Becoming a mountain guide is a complex process. This is a real job. The certification as mountain guide instructors is obtained by attending theoretical and practical courses and passing the relevant examinations.
Admission to courses is also subject to passing aptitude tests: a written examination, a CV check with a possible interview and a final practical examination.
The written test covers topics such as provincial tourism legislation; geography, environment, and local history; history of mountaineering; knowledge of flora and fauna; meteorology and topography; and, of course, first aid. The purpose of the CV check and interview is to ensure that the candidate has sufficient mountaineering experience.

You might wonder what the most challenging part of the job is. As we all know, men have no control against the power and unpredictability of nature. «I observe, evaluate and protect» replies Ezio with calm voice «Experience is essential, but the most important thing is to be lucid enough to deal with the critical issues of the moment. Sometimes you are tempted to take dangerous paths because they are the most spectacular or because travellers and tourists want to take great pictures, but it is important to know when to stop.»

Being aware of what you are risking is a must, but the emotion, the overwhelming sense of awe you feel at the sight of certain panoramas, is priceless.

Everyday Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti offers complimentary excursions with guided itineraries for hiking, walking or e-biking, together with a selection of personalized experiences.
