Heritage of Excellence for over 125 years: The History of Ferrari Trento

As with all the beautiful things, it takes time and patience to produce wine. Wine is born from poetry: From not believing that a bunch of grapes hanging from a vineyard can become the precious content of a bottle. A process of history, nature, work and secret formulas. We went to discover more in one of the temples of Italian sparkling wines: Ferrari Trento opened its doors to us.

Ferrari bubbles have been the reference for the Italian toast par excellence for over a hundred years. Sustainability, respect for the land, a constant quest for quality and a great attention to detail are the values that guide the entire production process, generation after generation. For this reason, every bottle provides a unique experience.

Ferrari was the first Italian producer of Metodo Classico bubbles and there is something incredible about the story of this company. The legend of Ferrari began with a man, Giulio Ferrari, born in 1879, and his dream of creating a wine in Trentino capable of competing with the best French Champagnes. Coming from a family that owns several plots of land, Giulio studied at the Agricultural Institute of San Michele all’Adige and immediately developed a passion for oenology, which he carried on studying in Montpellier, France. He then went to the Rhineland to study yeasts and completed his training in the Champagne region. He started to produce a few highly select bottles that, in 1906 already obtained a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Milan.

As soon as we enter the cellar, our eyes are lost in the aisles of bottles arranged on typical wooden wine racks. In more than 350 vats, the must is made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes hand-picked in more than 132 hectares of certified vineyards owned by the Lunelli Family and by about 700 vine growers who meet the required standards. After fermentation and malolactic fermentation, the wine is placed in the same bottle that we will open to savour it. The ageing process ranges from a minimum of 18 months in the bottle for the Classic Line, to a maximum of 21 years for the most prized bottles.

Today, the company is led by the third generation: Marcello, Matteo, Camilla and Alessandro lead the company together with an extraordinary team, with the aim of combining innovation and tradition, taking Ferrari and its land around the world. It was this company that fought for the Trento DOC recognition, and from this we understand the importance of taking care of things, which has always been part of the family. It is something that can be found everywhere. It is a microcosm of beauty, of the Italian way of life and of care for our origins.

Since the 1980s, in addition to Ferrari Trentodoc, the Lunelli Family has wanted to develop other products that share its core values. This has led to the creation of a group that has become synonymous with top-quality Italian beverages throughout the world. In addition to Ferrari, the group’s portfolio includes Surgiva, a light and exclusive water brand, Segnana, a historic grappa, the Trentino, Tuscan and Umbrian wines of Tenute Lunelli, a brand with a long tradition of Prosecco Superiore and Cedral Tassoni, the company known for its iconic cedrata, a syrupy sweet, bottled drink made from the citron.
